Smoking on idle

I've looked on previous threads re this & the prognosis doesn't sound good.
I noticed this last night for the first time at set of red lights. When she's up to running temp & idling, there's a fair bit if smoke out of the exhaust - difficult to say what colour & it smells of burnt diesel. I checked the coolant tonight & it was 3/4 ltr down. Any ideas other than head?

was it at night? if so its not unusual to see smoke from the exhaust in the headlights of other cars. I take it you have topped up the coolent, i would run some redex through the truck, put a full bottles in to a quater of a tank, turn off the overdrive and drive it like a boy racer. Keep an eye on the coolent level, if it goes down again first check for leaks in the system i found the bottom hose on my truck was leaking, new jublee clip and problem solved. If you can find a leak then get a gas test. Dont worry too much yet do the simple stuff first.

Cracks between valves in pots 2 & 3.
Could do without the expense just now.
New head arrived from Rough Trax this morn.
