The last leg from China to Australia is a pretty big jump - I'd take a packet of biscuits and a few beers. Oh and a good, big, inflatable boat.

When are you leaving? Do you have a website/blog or other way of following your progress? Sounds amazing.

This site has a list of all tools/spares etc that these guys took to drive the length of Africa in a Defender - might be useful as a starting point.

If it's automatic I'd take a spare starter motor.

                Thanks for the reply guys..

We are leaving on the 15th of July – we are planning to make a website blog, will post the address when it’s up and running here.

Charvell you mentioned Stat .. thermostat yeah? I was thinking of taking a spare.. a high temp thermostat (or low..little confused there) because it’s going to be warmer when we leave..and most likely doing allot of 4x4 in Mongolia

Lord- yeah I made sure that before we bought the car the timing belt had been changed.

Wishbone.. yeah I was thinking a spare starter, and water pump... I have read that the water pump is a prick to change over... you don’t have to take off the timing belt to change???

GWH- im not going to take a spare head.. if something like that goes I will serious have to weigh up just leaving the car.. OR running her until she is completely into the ground... We are not taking a trailer and have limited space.. I suppose the other option would be getting one shipped.. but we only have to till the end of demeber to get back.. waiting and fitting for a new head could take months

Again guys thanks for the input.. anything else?

2nd gen surfs mostly come with a 2 battery system factory fitted - don't know if 3rd gen are similar? If so a breaker would probably sell you the fittings for the second one cheap enough - have a look in the 'parts for sale' section for someone breaking a 3rd gen and give them a shout?

Looking forward to reading your blog once it's set up

instead of another battery why not get one of those electric starter/compressor things that jump start the car and blow tyres up, they come with a lead so you can keep them charged with the cig lighter socket £35 at aldi now. H

With my recent experience I'd consider taking another alternator too!!!
My mate has an off road spec 90 defender, he's had another alternator fitted for running winch etc. I wonder whether that would be worth a look, just in case.
Trip sounds awesome, opportunity of a lifetime. I'll look forward to following your progress
