  • WVO heat exchanger install

I am planning on fitting a coolant heat exchanger for the fuel line and also a 3 port valve to run twin tanks.

The question is should I fit the heat exchanger before or after the main fuel filter?

    Thanks

Is your heat exchanger heated just by the water cooling system ? If not mount it before, otherwise mount it after and consider an extra electrical heater to go before (check out the items from Saverbee on fleabay) - for example there is this.

It's coolant heated shown in the attached link

Would there be an advantage mounting it post the filter to preserve more heat for the pump and injectors?

      Thanks

I would have thought that mounting the heater before the filter is better, because the filters have been known to clog up with cold, congealed veg oil.

You could mount that post filter, but I would seriously consider having an electric heater before the filter, this will heat and thin the oil making it easier to pass through the filter.

You need to remember that it takes time for the water to begin to warm when cold, the electric heater will have benefits much quicker.

Once up to temperature the thermostat will switch off the heater as and when to maintain a reasonable temperature - you will be amazed how warm the fuel gets from both the return line usage and the engine warmth.

I used to run 100% veg throughout the year and that heater made one hell of a difference.

Thanks - I should be ok when the engine is cold as will start and stop on dino from tank 2.

If it's the only one you're fitting, put it inline before the filter, as Vince suggests. If you have any intention of also fitting an electric one anytime in the near future, put it inline after the filter, as Trev suggests.

If i am running pure veg in the main tank (with a heat exchanger in the fuel line) and dino in the start/stop tank is it necessary to use a small amount of dino in the veg tank during cold temperatures to stop it gelling in the tank itself?

                Thanks again.
