  • Taking up slack ??

    Hello folks.

I'm experiencing a strange clunking feeling through the transmission, particularly when in 4 wd (especially when changed from drive to reverse and vice versa). Feels like a sensation of taking up of slack. Also have excessive vibration when starting the engine. Thought all of this might be something to do with transmission / engine mounts (but they appear OK visually). Can anyone please advise on possible causes, and how to check to find out what the problem is. I've been laid underneath twisting this and that, but not really knowing if what I'm finding out is normal or not !!!

    Look forward to your advice.

    Bye for now

Most likely the transmission fluid is low. Check the level with engine idling.

Thanks for your posts - Progress Report !!

        Hello chaps and chapesses,

Had a few hours working on the truck today. Drained and refilled oil from rear diff, transfer box and attempted front diff. One small problem, there was virtually no oil whatsoever in the front diff, and when I tried to put the new oil in it soon became apparent why, it came out pretty quickly past the seal where the left side half shaft enters the diff. This might explain the clunking when in 4 WD. There was also evidence of some seepage from the seal at the rear of the transfer box. I would really appreciate it if anyone could please tell me how difficult these repairs are to carry out, and if I will need any special tools to do them.

        Look forward to your comments.
