  • Speed sensor

Can anybody advise me where the electrical speed sensor is on the gearbox on a 1993 3.0TD Auto? I though I knew where it was but not sure now, picture would be great.

Also should the speed sensor look like this when removed?

        Thanks for the confirmation guys.

THe bit that confused me was that there are 3 wires coming from it and I was told there was 2 wires only. I guess I just need to take is out and have a look, unless somebody has a wiring diagram they could send me please?

I have bought a speed sensor, but it looks nothing like the picture and looks more like a black piece of plastic on the inside with no cogs?

        Is this the wrong bit?

            Thanks Nev,

Model number Y-KZN130W-GKPQT, Frame number KZN130-9012476.

Do you know if the sensor should look like the second picture, as the one I have just got doesn't and seems to be a long blank tube (sealed) and I was told it was further up the gearbox where the gear selector come out the bottom of the car.

Do you have a wire diagram for it to check the cable colours?

Help much appreciated, as I m pulling whats left of my hair out.

            Martin,

                Thanks Nev,

Does anybody know if I can test the speedo and the speed sensor before I buy a new one to test one which is broken, Cables look ok.

If I can, I don't want to buy both and find out it is something else is faulty?

I have read one thread regarding servicing the speedo, what grease do I need to use when cleaning it and putting it back in?

Never done it myself but I believe the sensor can be tested by spinning rapidly for a short period and check for voltage. You have to have a mulimeter set to AC though, I think.

Ok, the situation so far is that I have worked out that the 3 wires in to the speed sensor are as follows:-

                    black/orange - 12v power
                    blue - .05 v - ECU
                    green/red - .00 v - speedo.

Does anybody know if I can test out the connections by seeing what voltage comes out of the blue and, the green and red cable. I have been told that there should be a pulse, but it would be to quick to catch on a meter, is this true?

And can I use 12 volts for the test, as I was told originally it would only be 5 volts?

I would like to test out before buying a new speedo.

When I complete this I will post how this can be tested for future issues.
