  • 3.0TD Question

    Hi Peeps,

Long time no see, back in the land of the Surfs. Just purchased for the misses (If i can get it running again) a 2nd Gen 3.0TD manual.
Problem is its a non runner, the woman who owned it before me said it broke down on her on the motorway as it burst the radiator and overheated.
The RAC man said the head might have gone, but to me it looks like its had a new head recently, and its not pressurizing the system when you turn it over.
It will turn over but wont start, just wondering if anybody has any thoughts on possible problems that i could check.
I have checked the timing as i thought that might have gone as it sounds funny when turning over.
Bit of a long shot i know, but i did wonder if there was any commen problems. Is it possible for the fuel pump to be out of time with the crankshaft?

Hi Toad, If it's not the timing and it sounds funny when your turning it over, maybe a compression test is the next step. (maybe done the rings when it over heated?)

3.0's head gaskets can fail, causing not enough compression to start it.

Take the head off and get it pressure tested, if your lucky just the gasket has gone, otherwise the head may have cracked.

              Right update so far:

I have pulled the head off, i think the cam needs replaceing as three of the lobes are badly worn due to the fact that 3 of the valve lifter shims have broken up and been spat out by the cam. So thats one job, new cam and valve lifters, change the valve stemseals.
I'm a bit worried about No.4 piston as the crown looks to be damaged slightly so I'm running a wet compression test at the moment to see how bad it may be.

EGR valve, can i dump this feckin thing, it was a pain in the arse getting the head off due to that, so if i can dump it, what do I take off and block off?

              TIA

Cheers mate, will have a word with him.

Well piston 4 is defo in need of new rings as is No. 1 as they both failed the wet test miserably. So its definately an engine out job to take the pistons out and investigate further
