Glow Plugs - Light doesnt go out

When I turn the ignition the glow plug light comes on but doesn't go out, starts OK (cos its warm !) but i get a bit black smoke, only one "puff" ! I guess that this is a pretty sure sign that the plugs are foobarred ? or can something else give the same result ?

may be the glowplug relay.If it is this and someone else confirms it then i have several here
