  • idling problems

    Hi all first of all great site very knowledgable ,just registered and im desperate for help , bought myself a ssrg surf back in december after being told these thing run for ever if u service them frequently but im starting to think i bought a mule :S

    So far i have fully serviced her, head has been off and welded 2 cracks(professionally i know i should of replaced but money was an issue at the time) after that was done she was running perfectly then started getting sluggish and very underpowered .After a quick inspection under the bonnet I noticed the pipe on the turbo sensor had snapped off .Anyway it now has been replaced and goes like a rocket compared to before now here comes the current problem .


    Star her up in the morning she starts on the button as normal no smoke no strange noises under the bonnet and all is fine till i accelerate away and come to a stop at the first junction she barely idles on tickover often stalling unless i keep my foot on the brake and slightly increase revs( at which point the poor person behind me is being gased half to death from the dark black clouds of smoke pouring from the exhaust .yet when i pull away and accelerate hard the smoke clears and shes off like a rocket until the next junction .

    Now ive read some of the stuff on here about the dreaded egr valve question i have does anyone know what the problem is or could it be this egr thing if anyone thinks it is then the stupid question is which "ufo" thingy is it i have 1 big one and a smaller "double" one many thanks in advance

      Me either - had mine (EGR) blanked off at both ends but don't ask me to explain it sorry. Can point the bit out in a pic. Still smokes but not as much.

      Welcome.....a knowledgable one might be along in a mo - you may even get a smiley offa him.

              It's the one at the back of the engine bay, nearest the firewall / bulkhead saw the link to the pics only earlier today, hang on i'll go dig it up again.

              If that doesn't work it sounds like it could be a vacuum problem, or might be worth a search for throttle butterfly.

                        thanks for the speedy replies!! i thought i was the only insomniac around:P

                        i shall have a read up on those links ive looked at the pic of the rgr valve the problem i have is i have 2 ufo "things" right at the back of the engine bay right nect to each other one is quite big the other smaller one looks like 2 "ufo's" stuck together on top of each other . forgot to mention on earlier post shes an N reg ssrg 3.0 whether that makes a difference or not .

                        Any of you actually think the symptoms im having relates to this valve at all ?

                          Mines a 2.4 an from what I've seen they can differ - ha ha ha stupid statement that is.

                          Sorry - I meant to say yes it does (I think) oh now I am just going to give up.


                          Maybe the drink is having an effect after all - you watch I'll stand up an fall flat on me face....

                            It could do and it doesn't cost you anything so it's worth a try, it could be a numbr of things, start with the simple ones first, rule them out one at a time. IMO it doesn't sound like anything major or expensive unless it's fuel pump related, but let's not get carried away.

                            I'm not sure if the 3.0l have it, or where it is, but on the 2.4s the rocker breather recirculates back into the intake pipes, worn engines breathe heavily, and carry a lot of oil vapour back into the intake, where it condenses and get's drawn through the turbo and into the intake manifold / throttle / cylinders and is burnt with the fuel, causing smoke. I think, oil normally causes grey/blue smoke, black smoke is unburn't fuel i think.

                            Could be a sticky throttle spring or plate or something like that or faulty throttle position sensor, but these are just ideas coming into my head, i'm by no means a mechanic.
