There has been a lot of controversy about this over the last 4 or 5 years, and this thread shows that - read it all:

However, and taking into account NiftyNev's statement on the last page of that thread, here is an extract from a Castrol info. sheet:

      CASTROL RX SUPER
low ash SAE 15W-40, API CI-4, diesel engine oil specially formulated to meet the needs of the latest American heavy duty diesel engines. It is also suitable for mixed fleet operations. Castrol RX Super provides excellent soot handling, oil consumption control and engine wear protection.

      CASTROL TECTION J-MAX
      (FORMERLY J-MAX)
high ash SAE 15W-40 diesel engine oil specially formulated to meet the needs of modern Japanese diesel engines. It is also suitable for older generation European diesel engines requiring MB 228.1 level technology. Not suitable for Detroit Diesel 2 cycle engines.

Good luck. I was using a low-ash oil for a couple of years, but had problems with sooting and have progressed to high ash oil. Make up your own minds, but remember (and I think I am right here) that the Japanese got their technology for engines from Europe.
