  • Hot Radiator

Hello, just picked up my surf yesterday, it seems to be perfect apart from the radiator gets very hot even after a couple of miles.
It has just had a new one fitted before I picked it up, it does not loose any water, and the temp does not go up, although I have not been on a long journey yet, also the fan is working ,
Just seems to get a bit to hot,
Any info or thoughts will be appreciated.
    Cheers Kevin.

Congrats on your new toy mate. The surf does generate a lot of heat under the bonnet just keep your eye on it. some of the others no doubt will add there comments

Do you mean that just the rad heats up, or that the temp gauge zooms up? If as you say, it is a new rad, then there may be an airlock, or it could be the viscous fan not coming in at the right time. It could also be the paranoia that all new vehicle owners suffer from, until they get used to their new baby.
      Enjoy it.

there is no venting on the bonnet etc & these engines produce a lot of heat.
so its not unusual for the top of the radiator to be very hot. the 2.4 is the same

The temp gauge stays normal all the time, it is just the rad that gets hot, somtimes to hot to touch. hope its just paranoia with all this talk of heads etc, I will be towing an ivor williams with just one horse next week, think I will need some valium or somthing to keep me from worying.
            Cheers Kevin.

rule of thumb is to replace the rad cap & thermostat

If it was cold I'd be worried! As long as its hot top and bottom, all's good.

Surfs heat up nice and quick, even the V6 petrol 4Runner would be up to temp after a mile. Its in the winter when you need the heater on.

If the rad is very hot could be that its clogged lower down and therefore restricting the flow of coolant. See:

Better to flush the radiator regularly than to replace the head once.

could it be that there is no coolant been put back in?? Cheers Kevin
