What is the latest rule on using veg oil or biodiesel with regard to duty payable? I have been running on and off on bio d, but it's hard to get hold of. Is it right that if I buy one of these plants to make my own there is no duty payable as it is exempt?

If you make/use under 2,500 litres a year then no duty to pay, and you have to record your usage, the records have to be kept for 6 years.

      Thanks Trev,

Is that the same whether it is processed at all or not ie can I put straight veg oil in the tank and the exemption applies? I thought it was only exempt if I processed or "produced"it. Is that wrong then?

That's how I took it too.

I photocopied my till receipts though, as those thermal prints fade and won't last 6 years.

            HI,
Am i going to the wrong shops or something, the price of veg oil is practically the same at any supermarket, which usually run at around £1.20-1.30 a litre which is the same as diesel anyway... how can there be any benefit in doing that?

You have to buy it in bulk to make a savings or scrounge it from a chippy!!

The reason I thought the exemption applied only to processed fuel was a radio program on radio 2 last year when a chap said that he puts the odd bottle of veg oil in and the presenter(Jeremy Vine I think) said that was illegal as the duty needed to be paid as it was not being "processed". Has that now changed then? or has it always been simply a 2500 litre limit?

Can anyone help me on wishbone bushes? It looks long winded and I am thinking about letting the garage do it.

The law changed July last year, previously we bombarded HMRC with cheques
