  • 2.4 Viscous fan on a 3.0l

    Hi All

Can any one give advice as to fitting a 2.4 Viscous fan on a 3.0L ?
The reason I ask is, we just drilled and screwed the fan on our 3L as the fan stopped doing its job as we towed the caravan home. Found a fan clutch on ebay but 2.4.
Then to top it all off just read a post on here of how to repair a fan ?

    Any info please.

Hi i tried to put a 2.4 on a 3litre and it would not fit, the hole in the centr of the 2.4 was to small for the 3litre water pump.

      Cheers for thr reply.
I got a 3.0 ltr viscous off this forum, replaced the silicon oil and fitted it today.
Fingers crossed! this may cure the over-heating when towing the caravan, I will find out tomorrow when I take both for a run in the morning.

Hi Dean. It might pay to do a coolant change and give the system a good burping and fit a new rad cap and thermosat aswell

make sure all the air is out the system.heaters on hot full blast and top up the rad till no more air comes out.make sure the expansion tank is at least 1/3 full or you'll start sucking air in.Once you think all the air is out then take for a good drive then come back allow to cool down and recheck levels. If you can leave the front end facing up hill a bit over night then leave the rad cap off so any more air will rise and out the filler top.Put the rad cap on the drivers seat over night that way you wont forget to put it back on in the morning

              Cheers

Just found another post on fitting a burp bled valve out of 15mm copper.
Will give it a go I think.

I doubt that burping is the issue here, I thought that the 3.0 l was less likely to airlock than the 2.4 due its rad cap being in the proper place ( on the rad as opposed to hlf way down the block ) If you think youre cooling system is in good order its more likely a workload issue. ( Towing a van). If you have an auto you could consider an ATF cooler. In any case maybe even thats not an issue. You only say that the fan stopped working and presumably a temperature increase led you to that. If it was OK after bolting up the fan then all you need is a working fan and everything else becomes a "good thing to do" but in your case preventative rather than curative

Only had the Surf 3 weeks.
Its had new oil, oil filter, Fuel filter, Air filter, Redex treatment, Viscous oil replaced, new coolant, Runs really well when not towing. The engine temp gauge only rises to just under the halfway point even when its driven at 80 on m/way and driven hard around town. I will have to hook the van up and take a test run on the m/way prior to any long trip to see if it gets too hot again, the van is only 1400kg fully laiden so it should not be an issue with pulling (I hope).
Will have to get a Volvo if the Surf can't tow?

Tows at 60mph without any issues, going above 60 seems like hard work for the engine going up small hills on the M25 between junctions 26 to 23 it still gets hot the needle goes close to the red even when not trying to hold 60mph. Viscous dosn't seem to cut in even though its been refilled, get on the flat and the needle starts to drop.
Just taken the viscous apart again and adjusted the screws on the fan side of the coupling hope this cures it.

Considering the engine size and pulling power it should have, its turning out to be more hassle than ever expected for use as a tow car.

You've probably got a blocked rad, you shouldn't have issues with 1400kg.

An aux AFT cooler is always nice with an autobox that tows, but thats only for big trailers.

With auto boxes you have to change your driving style when Towing, Dont floor it, ECT on O/D off until you get upto 60mph.
My old 2.4 used to warm up a bit when towing up hills but she was pulling 1750kgs

How do you know it's not working? How did you test it? How much fluid did you put in it? Did you adjust the plate in the correct direction, btw?

What exactly have you done with regards to servicing the coolant system so far? What condition is the ATF fluid? Has it been replaced?

                            new oil oil filter.
                            will do atf fluid today.
                            And take for a run.

ATF fluid is red wine colour should not need replacing.
Thermostat and rad cap will be here tomorrow.
If that don't cure it, then it goes on ebay and I look for a new car.
