when i break quite hard there is a single knock that appears to come from the front off side of the car. i have been under it and nothing appears to be loose. anybody got any ideas what it might be?

Check that all the retainer springs are on your front brake pads. If one has dropped off it can cause a 'clack' noise when you first hit the break pedal.

the knock occurs after the breaks have been deployed and the front of the car has dipped, it sort of happens half way through stopping, if that makes any sense.
