Historically the best mpg I've had is when I've broken down - and I'm arriving at my destination on the back of the recover truck.

we were driving in Norway in August on our summer holiday. 50mph is the max speed limit!. Actually it was much more relaxing driving at that speed. BUT much fewer cars around, no tail-gating arse's, and £700 fine for speeding.
we were driving our subaru forester, which normally averages 31mpg in UK. we got 35mpg on some tank fulls in Norway!

And you have the option of going faster you want try being electronicly stuck to 54mph and no faster except downhill with a load of weight on board for 4hours at a time thats when you know how boring it can get. And you wonder why HGV drivers get the noddys if there minds drift off or there boss insist on the load getting to a place at a certain time even tho he has been stuck in another depot for hours waiting to get tipped..Some boss`s only think of the fine they get for being late and not the cosequence of an HGV killing someone through fatigue.

I went from my house in cleveland to santa pod in wellingbourgh northampton yesterday and going down 75-85ish i managed to use a full tank or as good as, And my mate sat in the back and worked out it averaged 19mpg. Coming back up it used about 45-50 lts. We travelled back around 65-70 for around 140 miles then got bored for the last 80 miles and then went to 80ish and it was 1oclock in the morning.

im sure as well that how you get to your desired cruising speed has an effect
if like me its pedal down all the way then that will make a difference
drive like a pensioner and that will get you better results of course all this is dependent on how many miles you do off motorways etc
