It's taken me two years but I finally put unleaded in the tank - about 12l. I got Green Flag to tow me home so I'll just get the tank drained now, but could I have got away with filling the tank up with diesel?

I think you probably could, some here have used some unleaded to thin Veg in colder seasons.

If you had put 50% veg and 50% diesel on top it may have been ok, the veg would have upped the viscosity and lowered combustion level, thus stopping pre ignition. But safest way is to drain it, 12 litres is alot of unleaded.
