Can I change my UJ's?...I cant get to the circlips!

Hi all,

Just bought a new UJ as mine are shot...after much deliberation, I have decided to have a go at changing it myself (managed to scrounge a vice!)...problem is, i have had a look under the surf and cannot see where the circlip/snap clips are...the ends where the clips are are smooth...are these covers with the clips underneath or can I not change my own UJ's?...HELP!

Look inside the yoke around the base of caps. The snap rings are there and not at cap ends.

Thanks for the reply and image...do I still remove the UJ by using the vice and 2 socket method even though there appears to be caps over the ends? (They look like caps in the image)...my new UJ has a grease nipple on the end of one of the UJ points (rather than in the centre)...do I leave the cap off that one?....sorry about the questions...dont want to go at the job like a bull at a gate and screw it up...ive got a talent for that!

Yes

my new UJ has a grease nipple on the end of one of the UJ points (rather than in the centre)...do I leave the cap off that one?....

Remove the grease nipple and replace after you have installed the UJ. The UJs on the vehicle are the same setup as the new ones. The caps cover the roller bearings between these and the joint itself. Carefully slide one off and you will see how they work. Be careful not to dislodge any rollers.

Make sure you mark the prop shaft and flange before removal so you can replace in the same position otherwise balance may be upset.

Its really a simple job once you get down to it,even I got it down to around 45 mins last time.. Just make sure you do as Nev says and mark the prop before you remove it.
