  • Help!!!!!!!!!!! Cylinder Head / C.H. Gasket

    Hi

OK to cut an embarassing story short I have blown the engine on the "truck" after running for far to many miles without water in the rad.

Now it wont start, turns over and pumps up the rad so I'm thinking that the cylinder head gasket has gone between (at least) two cylinders and a waterway. Am I right?............ or is the head fkd.

If so does anyone know a mechanic in north Liverpool / Liverpool / Merseyside / Northwest who can be trusted to check it out properly inc other things that may have been effected by the heat. They would also have to be willing to collect without charging a fortune for the recovery.

      Thanks Marky

I was thinking of Stevo, but I wasn't sure where he was and I did not have or seem able to find it.

      Cheers again

OK I didn't contact Stevo (yet) - I've been talking to a local mechanic, and after much disussion He/We think I might be better off going for a secondhand engine. So......................

Does anyone know anywhere that could be trusted to obtian one from or somewhere to get a recon one?

        Thanks in advance

I`m with Marky on this one. Better to have a new head and whatever else required than to buy a secondhand engine. Unless its a recon. or you can hear it running and do a cheap head test on it, dont do it! The warranty on a secondhand engine does not usually cover labour for fitting, unfitting and fitting again.

                Engine

OK found an engine - 63000 miles £700 inc VAT

Trying to confirm if mileage can be verified, what if any tests have been carried out and exactly what it includes.

Do we think the price is OK - I'm obviously going to try and get them down if possible

                  Mate dont do it.

Go for a new head, you could be in the same boat in a couple of months and 700.00 out of pocket. If you go to Stevo you will get a top job and a decent garentee (I know that not how you spell it)

You have asked for advice but seem to have made up your mind. At the end of the day its your call

Agreed, same thing could happen in six months and there could be other problems. Stevo couriered me down a head, picked up the old one and spoke to a local mechanic I use to give him a hand with fitting.

                      Engine swaped out

                      Charvel / Contaminated

Yes I had made up my mind by time you posted the last two comments as there were now indications that the damage was more than just the C.H / gasket.

I now have a new problem with may or may not be related to having the engine replaced and seems as if there may be an electrical element to it.

The engine has cut out a number of times and the engine check light keeps coming on and going off. Also when the box is in neutral all seems OK except when the indicators are on or when you put the brake on to select gear and then the instruments jump and dance all over the place. Also when driving and using the indicators the radio cuts out when they are first switched.

I'll try a diagnostic tomorrow but in the mean time does anyone have anything like this happen and what did it turnout to be - is it posible that a bad earth on the gearbox might cause this ?

There are a few other things that happen but difficult to explain and all are worse when in gear!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like a sensor or ECU problem.

The auto 'box and engine 'communicate' with each other via the ECU. If one or more of the sensors are not connected properly, or one of them is not working, then running problems will arise.

There is a seperate wiring loom that connects the transmission to the engine.

Was it definately a Surf engine you had fitted?
