  • oil change for dummys

    hi there

i recently bought oil, air & fuel filter inc 7 lts of oil from milners £45 inc p&p not bad as recommended by bushwacker! anyhoos can u tell me what order the oil change has to be done. i dont want to drain oil if i cant get the oil filter off! as i dont have the proper oil filter removal tool (will this come off by hand? do i take this off first if i can?) ive got a basin plus the sump washer and oil, all i need know is how to start this oil change. ive read some posts already and im a little confused by some of them. can u also tell me where i can get a picture on where the sump plug is? ive managed to do the air & fuel filter myself so far and want to make it a 3 out of 3 and stick 2 fingers up at those rip off garages

    kind regards mr angry

First off, take the vehicle for a run to get the oil hot, that way it drains easier. Then remove the sump drain plug whilst positioned over a suitably sized container for the old oil to drain in to. Take out the sump plug slowly as once it clears the last few threads the oil will $$$$ out so you need to be able to remove your hand, whilst still holding the sump plug, quickly!!

You can remove the filter whilst its draining as most of the oil would have worked its way back into the sump anyway. If you don't have a proper filter wrench, try shoving an old screwdriver crosswise through the end of the filter casing and use that to twist it off.

Clean well around the sump plug hole and around the filter housing to get rid of any grit and/or old oil once its stopped draining. Refit the sump plug then screw on the new filter (don't cross thread it!!). You need to put a smear of fresh oil on the filter rubber gasket before doing it up. Hand tight is usually sufficient.

Then refill with new oil to recommended level (around 5.5 to 6 litres from memory). That should be it but check the level on the dipstick after you've run the engine and allowed it to get cold again and top up as necessary.

EDIT. The filter on the 3.0L is easier to get to than on the 2.4 but there's not much room around it to get a filter wrench on and turning anyway due to all the other components being in the way but once you get it moving it should spin off easily by hand anyway.

The sump plug for engine oil on the 3l is just behind the bash plate. The obvious sump plug further back is the ATF.

Common mistake to drain the ATF!

        hi there

when u say behind the bash plate do u mean the guard the covers the bottom of the engine? when u look from the side does it curve round and do i need to take this bash plate thing off?

        regards me

No, you should be able to get to the sump plug without removing the bash plate.

Just grabbed a pic. Bit wet here to crawl so camera held behind the passenger side front wheel.

As Tallyman said no need to remove bashplate.

            Arrow to oil sump plug.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I cannot find the sodding sump plug anywhere, and the picture doesn't load for me to check :-( Anyone got another they could upload? I've got a KZN185, hoping I don't need to remove the guard. I've been following this http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsit...ange_1KZTE.htm but can't find what they've got in the picture.

You can each the drain plug with the guard on or off, it's easier to reach with it off though.
Make sure you have a BIG Container for the oil to drain into ! If you have one of those oil drain can things with two removable bungs in the top you will get covered with hot oil.....
It just can't drain in fast enough!
