Originally posted by vatchmanyou could always do it the way i did richards truck, undo the rear shock bolts remove panhard rod bolts, and put a hydraulic ram between the axle and the chassis xmember, took about twenty minutes, job done.(oh i did use spring compressors to refit the lc springs though.)
Amateur!
No need for spring compressors or jacking devices to fit L/C springs.
Just remove panhard rod, unbolt the rigid brake line from the axle and the top bolt from the top control arm on the drivers side, get a bloke (Apache was available for me!) to push down on the brake drum enough to remove old spring and pop in the L/C spring.
No need to unbolt the control arm on the passenger side as there is no fuel tank to get in the way.

The trick is to let the weight of the axle itself do most of the hard work.
1) Get the back end of the Surf well up off the ground and put SOLID AXLE STANDS under the chassis. CHOCK WELL to stop it rolling!!
2) Suport the middle of the rear axle under the diff with a trolley jack (you may need to raise or lower this at times). The jack in the middle acts as the fulcrum.
3) Remove both tyres and disconnect the various bits required to allow full axle articultion.
4) To remove the first spring place a second jack under the OPPOSING brake drum. Jack up this side till the spring is easy to remove.
5)Use spring compressors to compress the new spring just enough in to get it in place. Remember you'll need to be able to get at the compressor nuts to remove the spring compressor after fitting spring! So be carefull with where you place them on the spring.
6) Remove compressor and take away the jack on the opposing hub.
7) Fitting the second spring is the same- put the jack under the opposite brake drum. This time it will be harder - be carefull not to dislodge the Surf from the axle stands- believe me they come down with one HELLUVA CRASH!
8) If you found that difficult- now try installing some +2" spring spacers as well!Last edited by laser_jock99; 27 January 2007, 02:01.

Got the springs in. I got a contact through a pal so on a stunningly beautiful day I drove the 1hr30mins to his place (usual distances involved in rural west scotland!)
I helped him to winch the body up and on an overhead gantry and then we could easily pop the old ones out and the new ones in. He only asked me for £15 but I gave him more as I thought that was a tad unfair. He's not an official garage more a farmer who enjoys tinkering. The info from this thread certainly helped so thanks guys.
The guy does all sorts of 4x4 work and told me the horror stories he's come across, mostly about Isuuzu's. Great guy to chat and listen to.
