is this ok to do

Hi guys i have been told to remove my front propshaft and drive the truck to determind which of the props is causing the vibration when i slow down from above 40mph, A guy has had a look at both propshafts and gearbox mountings etc and seems to think its the front shaft with a slightest amount of movement in the double type UJ joint at the transfer box end.

So is this ok to do and how long can i drive around like this for, ie: will it be ok for a week or two till i get it recond??

Excuse me if I'm being a here, just curious. Wouldn't the front propshaft stay still in 2wd anyway?

thats what i want to know,you can turn it with the wheels on the deck but will it spin when in the vehcile is in motion i dont know this is what i have been told to do by a guy who works at a 4x4 specalist, hence this thread as i know that one of you guys out there will have the answer, hopefully

Someone will come along who does more than just 'think' but I thought it wouldn't be driven by the engine because the transfer case deals with that end of things and is in 2wd, and it wouldn't be driven by the wheels turning because of the ADD at that end. But I'm just thinking out loud. I'll stop now.

Front prop should not be driven by transfer box in 2wd or by the rotation of the front wheels as the ADD will disconnect the driveshaft . Rear prop uj's tend to go first and give a vibration .
Worth checking wot tyres you have on there as the ones that come on the Surf from Japan may be mis shaped from vehicle being stood in dock for a while , plus the quality of some of the tyres are not good .

The front prop won't be going round in 2H, that the whole point of a part time 4wd system!

Remove the drive plates on the front hubs to rule out the front driveshafts if you suspect the front, but like has been said, normal culprits are tyres first, UJ's on the rear prop second.

I will do more than slap the specalist,im just glad i put this to you guys, ok i dont think its the tyres as the car was sound in may these symtoms started in november plus the tyres looked new and the car had a previous owner to me in the UK. still had the colour srtipes around the tread!! and the second thing is when this vibration started i looked at the front end first and tyres all steering and suspension parts all seemed solid so i decided to grease the propshaft UJ after reading on the forum about keeping them sweet and you will have no problems with them, take the car out and no vibration well just a little when slowing from 65-70ish and as time passed the vibs became worst aslong as im below 40mph thats great go over and you get vibs when slowing down/power off?????????.

Q: dose there have to be any movement in the rear propshaft to idicate ware in the UJ

Generally the UJ's will be sloppy if you hold either side of them and twist, if there is more than a tiny bit of play then they are toast! I had occasions where the joints are tight and rusty, so obviously don't have any play in them, you have to pull the shaft out and feel for tight spots when flexing the joint by hand.

Also the rear wheel bearings are worth checking, you need to remove the wheel and brake drum, then see if there is any in-and-out play by pulling on the axle flange. 0.7mm of end float is the about the max allowed.

AH but...

Vibration from slowing down won't necessararily be the props, these cause vibration at all speeds. Sounds to me like its a wheel balance problem/tyre tread wear or distortion. Jack each wheel clear of the ground and rotate the wheel whilst looking at the tread and tyre wall for signs of lumpiness/wobble etc. Check that no wheel balance wieghts have fallen off. Make sure that you haven't got an ovalised wheel rim (contact with something hard).
Hope this helps. If it were your prop shaft then you'd have the vibes at alll speeds

I have been under the truck today with the plan that i will grease up the rear propshaft UJ too see if that stops any vibration. My theory being if the vibration is reduced then its the rear shaft!!.Now the so called specalist said that my rear propshaft was sound.....im no expert as you all probaly worked that out for yourselves but 5mm of travel on a UJ joint aint right.OK its more like 3-4mm but hey im a fishermen. So i packed the UJ joint at the gearbox end with grease to take up as much of the play as poss and all seems well vibration wise when i took it for a spin, so i think that the UJ joints on the rear propshaft need replacing. thanks again for all advice for us newbie surfers and sorry to burden you all with simple question, but i think the so called specalist was trying to take me for an expensive ride.

Yeah the RG is in bits at the moment and the sp1 is off road until the gritters have gone into hibernation again. yes im a fair weather rider well you have to be with the near slicks ive got on the SP.....mmmmmmm sticky
