The `93 3l i`ve recently purchased had a new head 6 months ago together with new head-bolts and gaskets. I`m not sure of the mileage done since but will I need to re-torque the head-bolts and check the valve clearances? Will this have been done soon after the work was completed? There is a slight tapping when the engine is cold so shall I go ahead and do this anyway?

The head bolts are of the stretch type, so arn't torqued to a final setting as such. There is an initial torque reading - then you tighten them a 1/4 turn, all round, then another 1/4 turn.

I think the valves are set with shims.

Also check the condition of your engine oil, if it's as black as coal, it's sooty and may need replacing plus a new filter.

Hi,
I think my initial request was a bit confusing....... hence why I have`nt got the answer yet! (I know the engine oil gets sooty with use)
In simple terms: Does a 3LT cylinder head require RE-torquing at any stage AFTER the installation?

No, leave them. The torquing of bolts is complete.
Your concern will be more if the head was truely a nice new genuine toyota replacement and who did the rebuilding work.

If it was a refurbed welded head in the guise of a new beauty then good luck! Limited miles are available on your motor in my experience.

Valve Clearances are shimmed to spec by the head supplier or head refitter.
