    hello
when i drive my surf theres a rumble /vibration that starts about 40mph and gets alittle worst with speed but when i ease off it is really quite bad, this started about 2 months ago and i scanned the whole front end of the car looking for the problem eventually i got to the propshaft and greased it this nearly solved the problem there was just a slight vibration at about 60+mph.
the vibration is getting bad again so i was wondering have any of you guys experienced this problem yourselves, if i change the UJ's on the propshaft will this sort the problem or is there more items that could need replaceing.

    cheers

i was gonna replace all of them from what i can remember on both shafts as the vibration did seem to come from the front of the vehcile but i know with vibration that it can seem to be comming from elswhere away from the actual cause,
p.s. dose anyone know a good place to get the uj joints changed as i take it the need to be pressed out i live in warrington so if anyone knows a good garage for this in the north west i would be greatful

Had the same problem on mine a couple of years ago. One UJ was totally $$$$ed as it appears it hadn't been greased for ages. Greasing eased it a bit but the vibrarion came back pretty quickly.

Changing them is quite easy. It took me about an hour for one end as the other was OK and that includes lying under the car to remove and refit the propshaft. Any decent garage should be able to do the whole job in less than an hour. UJ kits available from Milners or Roughtrax if the garage can't source locally.

You will need a few ring spanners or a socket set. If you mark it up properly (i.e. put a mark on the diff and gearbox flanges and similar marks on the propshaft rear flange and front flange and the propshaft fixed arms and then make sure it all lines up again after you've replaced the UJ's then it should not need rebalancing.

You will also need circlip pliers as the UJ's are held on with internal circlips (i.e. they are on the inside of the caps not on the outside of the caps as on some other rear wheel drive cars. Best way is to rest the arm over a large socket and then drive in the cap opposite (after removing the circlip) the one over the large socket with an old socket that is just smaller than the internal diameter of the cap. Once the bottom cap is driven out, or out sufficiently that you can get a pair of mole grips on it or clamp it in a vice to remove it, you just turn over and bash on the revealed end of the UJ to remove the cap you just pushed in. A heavy lump hammer works best. Then do the same to the remaining one on the end your worked on and then clean up and fit the new UJ and caps, remembering to fit the grease nipple and give it a good dose of grease.

Do the same to the other end, then refit the propshaft to the car, making sure all the marks line up. Make sure the flange bolts are tight and that should solve your problem.
