Yup. If the noise goes after a couple of seconds, then the oil has lost it's clingyness (sp) and needs replacing.

Do you mean on start up everytime or when cold?

I have the same engine and I get a rattle on 1st start up on a morning or after leaving the vehicle about 4-5 hours.

Although my noise is diesel knock I suppose you could say it sounds like dragging a manhole accross the road, that noise is caused by the fuel being sprayed into the engine in advance of it's normal time, most diesel engines do it as part of the cold start procedure & it's nothing to worry about.

Saying that though, for the cost of oil & a filter it's worth changing the oil, it's a much cheaper than wiping the big ends out!

I agree on this one, also if you're using veg oil it will rattle a bit more, drop the percentage of vegi to diesel
