  • Strange Noise... (help)...

    Hi all,

I have developed a strange tapping noise from within the engine bay, it sounds like its coming from the passenger side just in front of the bulk head.

It's only there when the engine is under load (surf moving along) and increases in pace with revs, it sounds like the sound tappets make on petrol cars (i.e getting faster with engine speed similar sound etc) in fact it almost sounds like a short burst of high compressed air releaseing every split second (depending on engine speed)

I'm finding it hard to find as I'm not so keen on having my mate drive down the road while i'm under the bonnet looking for the sound...

Does anyone have any ideas what it might be... and will it be expensive?

I look forward to your replies.

    Thanks,

Check that the glowplugs are screwed in tight.

Any ideas on how I do that? Lol, I'm fairly technically minded but that's something I havent done before. Would I be looking roughly in the same place spark plugs sit on petrol engines?

If its not that anyone got any other ideas?

      Thanks,

      Simon

Yes. Off the top of my head thats all I can think of that would be making the chuffing noise.

12mm open ended spanner fits the glowplugs, or remove the strap from across the top of them and use a deep 12mm socket.

          Thanks Bushwhacker,

Assuming this is the problem wouldn't I be able to notice the noise in neutral with the bonet up with a mate revving the engine or engine on high revs?

I am assuming you are thinking that pressure is escaping from the cylinder through a loose glowplug? Wouldn't this make the car run like poo though?

She's running fine just making strange noises under load which is confusing the hell out of me...

            Yes.

You probably wouldn't notice it running rough, just ever-so-slightly down on power.

Did the noise suddenly start on it's own or after the engine was worked on?

If it ONLY happens when you move presumably it's something to do with transmission or drivetrain??

You could try putting it on a rolling road or something.....

The engine hasn't been worked on since I bought it, it does seem to be getting louder the longer I leave it (trying to avoid a garage bill) though which is what I cant understand. I think I will just have to bite the bullet and take her in I guess

Give Tony a call @ 4x4 toys, he's down your neck of the woods. He'll have a listen and give advice.

petrols..........tapits????? diesels have them as well don't they? when was the last oil change? do another see what that does. is it worse running from cold? if so try sligtly lighter oil for the winter.

or i could be totally wrong and be in the poo myself. will be checkin' the glow plugs as my engine makes this type of noise some times. i just put it down to needing and oil change.

Is the air filter box loose or air filter a bad fit?

Nope air filter and glow plugs all in place and tight...

I thought the air filter could have been a goer as I recently had the filter out to check the condition but she was snug as a bug and as tight as a nuns err collection box lock...

I guess she's gonna have to go in lads...

If this helps you mechanics out there the noise only really starts when I've been driving her a distance or booted the engine for an overtake...

If she's going in I had better have a full service at the same time.

This seems like a good time to do my 2" suspension lift... 2" lift coils from Roughtrax and tweak torsion bars at the front and hey presto...

I'm assuming that I can still use my original electrically controlled shocks with this option and that they are long enough? any comments?

And if any one has any last ditch efforts on what the noise is you could save me money and I'll buy you a beer...

Totally the wrong place, but maybe something to do with the turbo????

If you get Tony to do the service, lift etc etc just phone him beforehand and I'm sure he can advise on shocks etc.

you can keep the standard shocks with a 2" lift.you will only get a max 1 1/2" lift on those springs tho
