Fuel Pilter Pump

I have just changed the fuel filter on my 3.0 litre ssrx surf. After I changed it the pump on top of the filter did not get hard despite repeated pumping . The engine still started and is runnibg OK so far.
Does the system need to be promed by this pump?
Is the system self bleeding?
Do I need to replace the filter housing and pump?

I am going on holiday next week so need it reliable by then.

When I changed my filter I didn't need to pump the primer,
If you've driven more than ten miles since changing the filter then all is o.k.

I have had the engine running for over 1 1/2 hours on the drive whilst I flushed re flushed and refilled the cooling system. I have started it 4 times over that period with no problems. Fingers crossed then!
