  • Injectors done

Well I just got my Surf back from the garage after a few jobs. Got the t-belt changed, new injectors and diff/gearbox/transfer box fluids changed.

The old injectors were shot, When tested they shot out a stream of fuel, the needles were worn away. New one in and the fuel sprays nicely. The engine sounds better now, hard to describe but more of a loud hum! A lot less smoke, and the mechanic said it will decrease even further after a day or two when the cylinders clear out.

    T-belt + new injectors + transmission fluid change + labour = €500

    Sound good?

Dunno sounds ok, i was quoted €200 in wexford a while back just to service my injectors.

Got them done in a local garage Jim, It was €260 for new injectors. Even though the Landcruiser 90 and the Surf share the same 1KZ-TE engine, the Surf uses a different injector.

On the drive into work today (20k) the rig felt better, more responsive. And the smoke is not noticable. The fluid change for the transmission has made a difference as well, gearchanges are much smoother and moving from D to N has less of a clunk than before.

The driving just feels tighter...... I'm happy anyway!

Using mechanics goes against my religion now. Even if you can find a cheap one, you'll never find a cheap one who does a good job. DIY as much as you can, i say!

I do as much as I can Delboy, but things like the injectors and t-belt are not things I'd attempt. Given the time I would do 'em, and do 'em right. But with work etc I wouldn't be able to...

As for the fluid changes, It's easier to do on the lift so I let him do it for me. The way I look at it is this. All the parts/fluid etc would have cost me €350, so all I really paid for was the labour.

i had problems starting and had to light the glow plugs twice, as the light went off v quickly, i then changed both batteries and now the glowplug light stays on much longer and then it starts almost instantly, i don't know how the new batteries would affect the glowplug timer, but it was definately worth getting the batteries changed (£35 each from celtic batteries in treharris, s wales)

the glowplug light works with the engine temp when its cold it stops on longer, sometimes you may find that the heater light on the dash goes off too quick and the heater plugs are still warming up, so you try and start it and the plugs arent hot enough so it dont start very well, to check it when its cold turn the ignition on look for the light going off then listen for the timer box clicking off, you need to start it inbetween these two, if you wait till it clicks the plugs are already cooling down
