  • Spare wheel

I prefer the look of an under-slung spare wheel. If a vehicle has the spare on the back is it easy to remove and put underneath? Will it potentially leave tell-tale marks of where it was?

I would imagine that if the truck was origionally specced as a rear mounted spare, you won't have the winch mechanism and so on that is required to hod it in position underneath. There's a few people selling/breaking on ebay at the moment who kight be able to help with that.

Also, you'll have a blanking plate in the middle of the tailgate. That piece obviously isn't there in underslung spare models. Might be worth buying a new tailgate?

And, don't forget the holes left in the rear corner bodywork when the backet has been taken off.
    It just does, OK?

So really the best option is to buy one with wheel under already? These don't seem too common though.... Any major reasons why?

I would say so, yes. I guess the little Japs preferred the wheel on the back! Personally, I prefer the back uncluttered, like you obviously do. BUT, it wouldn't put me off buying one if everything else was as I wanted...

I would also have a bit of trouble getting in to the boot area on mine, if I had to swing the wheel out of the way and then drop the door down. It would mean a long walk round the truck to load it up.., and I don't do long walks!!!
        It just does, OK?

I may be wrong but I think it's the 3.0 Surfs that are harder to find without the rear mounted spare. 2.4s, loads of them about.

If that is right, Vince, then...... why??

AFAIK, they all came with the same size wheels/tyres, so it can't be anything to do with that...

            Odd!!!

Must admit that this is a fairly big reason why I'd like it underneath. I'll be using the boot a lot to get tools ect out, and I can see me getting a bit p***** off with swinging the wheel out the way each time..... and also I can see that the boot will be left down a lot of the time, so the wheel could get in the way?

Dunno, maybe it's just a popularity thing 'cos all the other 4X4/suv manfacturers were all fitting their spare wheels on the back, about the same time as the 3.0 litre Surf was introduced.

But hey, I could be typing b******s!

                oh, by the way.....Hi Libby!

If you mean you'll be driving with the tailgate down, then the rear mounted spare WILL be a problem. But then again, you won't have a number plate on show either, so.........

And Vince... What on earth are you saying????? You might be talking b******s?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Found a couple not too far from you, one in Southampton (the first one) and another near Yeovil (sixth one down). both 3.0 with under slung spares.
