Rear end whining

I am getting a lot of noise from the rear end of my 93 3.0, I cant make my mind up whether it is tyres or transmission. Are the diffs in the surf liable to failure or are they generally regarded as bulletproof?

Have you checked the oil level in the rear diff?
Maybe it's the prophaft U/Js want a pumping of grease.

Mine had a sort of rumbly/whiny noise just before a rear wheel bearing collapsed, losing diff oil all over the place... Might be worth checking?

Thanks guys, off to the workshop tomororw so will check oils and bearings etc then
