My 96 SSR-x will not select 4wd whilst in normal 2h-4h position, no problem in low ratio. Tried all the usual things, is selection controlled by electric solonoids on transfer box or some other method?
i've always had a problem on the go but if i stop and reverse for a couple of centimeters and then go forward again it normally engages - anyone have any ideas about this??

Tried that, still wont engage.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

When we had that few inches of frozen rain a week or so back that brought half the country to a stans still, I went out in my Surf and found that the 4WD would not engage. As I was mostly on tarmac after getting out of our road I didn't bother about it until I got to my destination, where I had to drive over a frozen field. Put it in 4L and it engaged straight away. When I came to drive out a couple of hours later, tried putting it in 4H and again it engaged straight away. I think it may be the solenoid was getting stuck through non use and after running a bit in 4L it seemed to sort itself out. Try that and see what happens.

Is it a third Gen (96) if so , what does the display do? is there a buzzer coming on? It should engage and disengage upto around 60mph no sweat.
If it is a 2nd gen then you will have to find some slippy ground and give everything some exercise(solenoids etc)
