  • speedo conversion

My Surf came with the speedo converted so that the originial Km/H scale can be used to indicate m/h. It had a chip installed and the 'k' blanked out. However, this reads at least 10% over the actual speed, when compared to the reading given by my sat nav, and the mileage is going up quicker that it should for known distances. My fuel economy must therefore be worse than I thought (25mpg) and I need to get it sorted. Anyone know how easy it is, or should I sned it back to the garage?

Yeah mine was similar but depends what you mean by conversion.

All mine had was a mph face which, like yours, is a good 10% fast but have left it alone. Like you, thought my mileage was going up blxxdy quickly then found out the mileometer was still reading in kilometers. How many people think their Surf reads in miles when it is kilometers loads I'll bet.

And so it will remain as its not worth all the hassle of changing it and even then it won't be accurate and calculating total vehicle mileages will need a degree in maths with the conversions.

      Don't worry just enjoy.

mines not recording KM, as the amount it's over on mileage reading is not that much. Did at known 18 mile trip and it recorded 22.8, whereas KM would read about 28km for the same trip. 25 mpg is OK, but that's based on the miles it's recording, not thoe miles is actually doing, therefore I must be getting lower mpg than 25.

It also uses the original dial, but a chip changes the amount the needle moves.

Not sure what you mean by pioneer avic x1r, but my sat nav is copilot. I'm taking the care back to the garage for a guy to check it out. Said they want it for 2 hours and don't want me hanging around whilst it's being done. Not sure about that, so I'll quiz the mechanic about what he's going to do first. Under warranty and only had it 2 1/2 months so should all get sorted.

Will let you know after weekend. Thanks for thoughts.

I'd deffo stay with it whilst their doing it... theres absolutly no reason for you not to be there unless their doing someting dodgy!!! As for sat nav.. I have tom tom 500... it always says I'm going 7-10 mph slower that the spedo says.. its the same in my 92 surf as the mrs's 04 honda jizz spedo's only have to be correct to within 10% sat nav is a much more accurate way of telling how fast ur going.

            So.. to sum up

Sat nav giving a different reading to speedo - normal, don't worry

Taco recording incorrect mileage get garage to look at it

garage not wanting you to hang around - rubbish stay anyway!

Feul economy depends on the weight of your right foot! anything from 18MPG if you thrash it every where to 30ish mpg if you keep between 50 and 60 MPH everywhere!

I'd echo Joe112: If a mechanic does not want you there, that calls the legitimacy of their actions or the standard of their workmanship into serious question. So long as you stay out of their way and don't trip over their tools, nobody legitimate will complain.

thanks for the advice - I'll ask if I can hang about 'out of interest' and my right to know what needs to be done, and will let you know how I get on. Needless to say, if the service and response I get is poor, I will name and shame, as they are a big supplier of quality imported 4x4's in the midlands.

I have a tom tom 5 sat nav and that reads about 5-7mph less that the speedo in my car, but when I use it in the works vans fitted with Tachos it reads the same.
Car speedos are not very accurate but have to be within 10%
Tachos have to be spot on.
I ignor the speedo and just read the sat nav.
When I get three points I may change my tune.

HGVs are limited to 56mph (+/- 1% as it's based on the info sent to the tachograph). For a true speed test, follow some on a motorway.

My surf reads 55 (bigger tyres), the Citroen 60.

Good to see the GPS is accurate!

                        it's actually 85kmh / 53mph

but most seem to do about 55mph (88-89kmh)

some will only do 50mph and some do 60mph...

some companies set them to 50mph

so depending who you're following, the speed will be different!

I think I've found the source of the inaccuracy - I checked the size of the spare tyre and it's a lot bigger than the four tyres currently on the vehicle. The spare is an unused Dunlop 275/ 75/ 16 and the running ones are 255/ 60/16 (- ish as this is from memory). I'm guessing the smaller profile of 60% of 255 makes a smaller wheel circumference when compared to 75% of 275, hence the speedo reading so much more than the care is actually doing!

What size in UK sizing, should be on a 3rd gen surf with 16'' wheel
