3rd gen suspension/tyres

Now then, I'm gonna start again. My previous posts concerned tyre rubbing and at the end I decided it might be best to change the tyres. Now having second thoughts. Currently fitted

265/75/16's
standard springs.

The tyres rub like crazy on turning (coupled with bumpy surface). I did think about going standard size - 265/70's but it would be a shame as there is loads of tread left. Others on here have the oversize tyres fitted and report minimal rubbing so I am thinking either

front springs are sagging - any help with standard rim to arch height? so I can check.

are uprated springs available HD rather than +2" ?

The tyres currently catch either the front arch trim or bolts on rear arch, either way its quite bad. At standstill turning the wheel the clearance is rizla fag paper territory.

Even if the springs are sagging, the rubbing you are describing sounds excessive for such a minor increase in tyre size. Are they standard rims?

The standard wheels 'n tyres on mine used to rub on the back of the arch when turning into my driveway at a certain amount of lock. 75s would probably have rubbed a lot more.
Problem gone now as I had a 2" lift and also replaced the lower suspension arm bushes (found out the old ones weren't that bad after removing them tho!).
Probably is slightly sagging springs, or suspension bent / damaged / not aligned

Don't know about springs, only ever seen lift springs from aftermarket suppliers. Probably best to go to Toyota but they'll probably be pricey. If Toyota tinkered about with the 3rd gen Surf in the same way they did with the 3rd gen 4Runner, they apparently varied the height of the front springs over the years. From what i remember from yotatech.com, the 1999 4WD 4Runner front springs were the tallest!

2nd Gen i had problems with 265/75/15's same problem catching front mudflap bolts & also limited lock as the tyres caught the chassis

Hi Morr, the extra size is about an inch. The rubbing occurs when the suspension travels a lot (over bumps) whilst turning hard. The rims are not standard toyota AFAIK but are 16" anyway. Pic attached

What I could really do with is the standard rim to arch measurement.

Rob, the suspension looks fine and as the problem is identical to both front wheels I doubt it is anything other than oversize tyres tyres paired with worn suspension. I just need to confirm this somehow

More than likely. Also, if not original alloys, a slight difference in offset etc could be adding to the problem.
Unfortunately mine is lifted so there's not a lot of point measuring it for you

Agree with Rob above, also would add that tyre pressures for 265/75/16's should be 28 psi front and 35 psi rear, and conclude by suggesting you check out whether wheel spacers are fitted twixt alloys and hubs OR whether they should be (with longer wheel nuts of course) although I am never happy with this arrangement for safety reasons...As stated by others, you need to investigate these clearances and wheels /tyres / suspension are the only variables in the equation...gud luk

Peter - where does that info on tyre pressures come from? I have read elsewhere on this forum that 30-32psi all round is the way to go, although haven't had the time yet to try out different pressures.

(Yet another ex-BM jockey - and another 1100GS...)

there is usually pressures marked on the sidewall of the tyre...

I looked up this info on another "database", knowing it had been published by a tyre specialist for whom I have the greatest respect....But to be fair to everyone on here, and this man, he was referring to this tyre SIZE, not in relation to any specific vehicle, AND it is true that a Toyota "stamp" on the B pillar states quite clearly "2 bar" pressure front and rear for standard tyres, which are quite a bit different from those shown on boxertwins' motor...no ?

Just fitted 265/70 Bridgestones. Tyre rubbing seems to have gone. Need a few more miles to be certain though. Whilst getting the tyres fiitted checked all suspension components and everything fine.

This was the easy bit! Discovered at last minute all wheels had locking wheel nuts fitted....and no fitting left by previous owner ! Oh what a time I had getting those off!

4 275/75's now for sale - plenty of tread left any offers ?

Long time ago, after fifteen years riding bikes for a living, was also a Instructor when cbt first arrived, and trained people on the intermediate an advanced courses....as all this was in league with a bike dealer -who supplied the trainees -the instructors were volunteers, and we were given special treatment by dealer including free servising an trade price bikes an consumables...I had a R100cs then a K100 (prototype) then a R80GS then a K75S then a K100RS each for just a few months....it was interestin an nice !
Then after 29 years a biker I stopped an got soft....and live to tell the tale....not saying my age now tho...... Enjoy bikes, best years of my life without doubt especially in highlands here....

Had the 1100GS (christened Captain Beaky by my kids) as a company bike for a couple of years, then bought it from the company when I left.
Ran it for another 2 years, using it for work until I had one too many accidents (see pic). This finally wrote the bike off - I had had 2 bad accidents in the previous 3 years which had come close to being write-offs, so I decided that enough was enough, and didn't get another bike - I want to see my kids grow up, for one thing
I have loved riding bikes, and have some great memories of biking - riding the South Downs Way and trying the get the pegs down at Cadwell Park on the GS, getting a knee down on my GPZ, and riding my KMX around the Canada Heights Motocross GP track. But in the crowded Southeast, the game is not worth the candle any more. Not for me, anyway

Besides, the Surf is the nearest 4-wheeled equivalent I can find, and this lot 'ere bear a disconcerting resemblance to the GS-riding crowd
