whirring noise

I have just bought a 1996 3.0l auoto surf (warranted
56500 mls) and i tink i've got a problem with bearings
(i dont know which ones) when i reach 40mph + i hear a
whirr,grrrr or what ever you would call it, i did get
worried cos i thought it could be the gear box but a
friend told me to put it in neutral and free wheel
down hill and see if its still there,it was so does
this mean its not the box? some times it seems louder than others, i just want to nip it in the bud but where do i start?

just to pull you in another direction for a moment..have you given the tyres a good check over? i only ask, because when i picked my surf up, from a dealer, i had all the same noises..i too suspected bearings, which can often be found to be loose..it turned out that the tyres were going out of shape, having been stood around for long periods without moving..caravan and trailer type scenario..the AA didn't pick up on it at the inspection, because they showed no symptoms of distortion at that point, but three out of the four gradually gave up over a period of weeks.only one of those "felt" oval, the other two were simply a bearing type noise..

Thanks for the reply, i cant say i have given the tyres a good inspection accept checking them for tred, but i understand what your saying. I've had a few friends drive it and they all say im being too fussy and its jsut road noise! Anyway as its my pride and joy and its dew for its first cam belt change i've booked it in for a mega servise with Tony from www.4x4toys.co.uk and im having both front wheel bearings changed. It wont be money wasted cos i intend keeping the surf till it falls apart!! i love it. If that dont sort it out i'll change the tyres next, thanks again Mickey.

I too hope it is sorted to your satisfaction...my own thoughts - rather late now, but only just read your question, were if not tyre noise or wheel bearing/s then possibly the cardan or Universal Joints needing a good greasing with a lithium grease...BUT as you are having it servised this should be part of the job in hand... only snag is, having everything done in a onner means you maybe not discover if there actually was a source to the noise... good wishes

you just need the waxoyle, 2" lift, 31x10.5x15 mud-terrains and a winch, you'll be in good shape for winter, enjoy..

YEP! Thats definitaly next on my list .I did check tyres and i dont think its that but like i said its probarbly me too being fussy! maybe a good greasing is all it needs, i did wonder it the oil in the diff is old or low!!!! could that make it sound whirry.

i'd assume it to be roadnoise marky..its easy to hear every creak and groan when you get ur new rig, and expect the worst...i did it too, i guess most of us do..of course i might be wrong, but i doubt anything has worn out at the sort of mileage you have on yours..i'm no expert on mechanical issues, so i'll not even hazard a guess re the diff oil issues...i've just had a result..i've only located four mud terrains, 31 ers at that for 15 quid a piece..ok, they ain't branded, or new..but they look as good as...guess i'll be whirring too pretty soon lol
