  • P/S sounding like a dying elephant

My little 3.0 ssr-x surf pup makes a sound of a dying elephant when I steer, when I first start up as well there is a severe lack of power steering. There also seems to be some oil around the pump. Sounds like the pump is running fairly dry. Fluid levels are ok though. Is it worth checking for a blockage? Anyone come across this before? Anyone know where there is a good cheap place for parts?

Is the drive belt properly tensioned?

If the fluid is OK and the belt is properly tensioned then remove the power steering resevoir cap (carefully) with the engine running . Get someone to turn the steering side to side . You should see the fluid move about when the pump works the steering . If no movement it maybe time for a pump rebuild .
      Just my opinion .

          cheers guys

Thanks for your help. Checked the level with the engine running, you were right no movement in fluid levels and the elephant still sounded like it was in a world of pain. Going for the reconditioning on the pump.

          Have a goodun
