Changed the fuel filter on my latest Surf , and now I cannot prime the sodding thing , I have over 1/4 of a tank of fuel but it wont suck it up to the filter , If anybody has any suggestions it would be appreciated .

the priming pump probably dont work, fill the filter with diesel, put it back on and turn engine over, this will draw the diesel up, if it doesent start slacken one of the injectors to bleed it through by turning the engine over

i had the exact same problem, i was priming it for ages, but no fuel was pumping through (seemed like one way valve not doing it's job), i took off the fuel pipe from the filter to the engine and pushed down, covered pipe end, released pump, uncovered pipe, pushed down, covered pipe end etc etc (in the same way as bleeding brakes) until no air was pumped out, refitted pipe, turned engine over (jump started as by now my batteries were flat) took quite a while, and then it started, took about 10 mins to change filter and an hour to sort out air lock.
You probably dont have the pipes to and from the filter unit on the wrong way round. But I did (and so did the fecker who did the filter job b4 me but it worked for him). Eventually when I realised the mistake, priming still didnt produce a result so I took the filter off again, filled it with diesel manually (a must - with hindsight) and filled the filter/pump feed pipe too... then back on with everything, probably a few pumps anyway and fired it up. Cant remember did I need to loosen an injector but that wasnt a prob.

The mechanic who did my timing belt when I couldn't be bothered reckons this is a common problem and a number of times he has used one of the drill powered pumps to suck the fuel through from the engine side.
lts only a suggestion but take off the fuel cap sometimes they are air tight and you cant get any fuel up.
that post slipped by me Hilux seen as it was 1am ish but that sounds like a great tip, never thought of that and my tank does get itself a good vacuum going, notice it every time i take the cap off

I did try that Bob it didn't make any difference , eventually had to syphon some fuel out and fill the filter , then after more pumping it worked , got arms like popeye now .
