not cheap but the "ready to fit" ones with bearings, cam shaft, and valves fitted will save a good bit of time.
Thanks for that, great site. I've ordered the parts locally in the end, it turns out I went to the same school as a local toyota 4x4 specialist and he wouldn't let me even consider non genuine parts. Pricewise he's about the same as everyone else. I dropped the old head into him yesterday and I should get the built up head back tomorrow.
I bought the car with an iffy head and ran block sealant for two years which I have to say worked well, but when it finally let go it was in a right state. It was cracked between the valves on three cylinders, had big cracks from the inlet valve on two and had started to corrode the block a touch although this has cleaned up OK.
The head has been off this car before - both sides of the head gasket had been painted with shellac and the lower rear inlet manifold nut had been left off. So this will be head number three for this car after 170,000 miles
