  • I can't find my nipples!

    I have a 1993 SSRV - Limited (?)

First problem solved thanks to the fine people on this forum (thought I'd "butter you all up" first!) - I had the dreaded scraping noise when full lock was applied so I went out and bought myself a grease gun and it's fine.

Second problem - I have a small squeak, (sorry I know there have been lot's of squeaks on here and I think I've read them all) which seems to happen when I'm going over bumps. I have had a look around the suspension area but I'm not sure what to look for really, but my intention was to use my new grease gun to try to solve this. To my horror I found that I have no nipples - anywhere! (sorry I can't help the childish pun - I am male after all).

Can anyone offer any "squeak when going over bumps" advise to a complete novice?

Incidently if anyone can be bothered to enlighten me, I would like to know what all the different generations are and different models, SSRV, SSRX, SSRG and I think I saw one that was something like KZN..... something or other listed on here. What is the "Limited" on my model for? Anyone offer any guidance?

    Much appreciated in advance.

I cannot help you on the squeak, but I can on your second question !

Your car is a 2nd Gen KZN130 Just like my Hippo

Do not worry about SSRV etc as the Japanese owners seemed to have been through the options book like mad - it's not rare to find lower spec models with more equipment

As regards limited, there are two schools of thought here - either Limited edition or has the limied slip diff (Hippo's axle is too muddy for me to see - oops!).

For the location of your nipples see General Servicing Info. I found most of them easily enough. You will probably need to turn the various prop shafts to access them. The front is easy enough with the transfer box in 2WD, the rear means rolling the car a short way - I did this by releasing the handbrake, and turning the prop shaft by hand whilst under the car, it was only when I had finished that it occured to me how really stupid an idea that was (if the car had reached the end of the drive and rolled off..... )

As stated look on the sticky page for information on grease points etc..

As to the Limited Edition...I do not believe it refers to Limited Slip Diffs....I have KZN130 Limited Edition and i thought I had slip diffs but after looking at the code on the Vin Plate [bulkhead under bonnet], jacking up the vehicle and testing for Open Diff [wheels turning in opposite directions] and speaking more with a garage I use I have now been led to believe it's just another trim model like the regular vehicles.

          squeek

The squeak over bumps sounds very much like a shock, there gas and do that when their on the way out. the very thing happened to me (squeeky bumps) and a month later it went. Two new shocks and no more squeeking!!!
Either that or a mouse has made its nest up in your wheel arch.

Slugsie, I've had a look for my nipples and found some thanks to the plans, but I don't think my Ball Joints have any for some reason. If Paolo is right though it may be that it's the shocker squeaking 'cos when I go over a speed bump it makes more of a "heavy squeak" but just general driving on a normal flat road surface it's a small squeak. I haven't spotted any rodents either!

            Thanks slugsie & Paolo.

Can any of you suggest what shockers to get, the best place to get them and the approx price?

Thanks for the model info as well UDTrev & Gizmo - At least I know what I'm driving now!

Grease your anti roll bar mounts on the axle before spending to much money, Cured 3 trucks of squeaks this doing that.

anti roll bar mounts... couldn't find a picture (sorry, newbie) ... where would I look, and what does an anti roll bar look like?

                  Thanks,

                  Keegan

... I have a front end squeel that seems to start around 50kph (30mph?) ... truck in at the shop right now... I hope it's not the hubs... I forgot to unlock them once after I took it out of 4x4 ... then drove a long way on the highway.

PS: also... I'll keep looking through the archives for this answer... couldn't find nipples for my ball joints (I'll look again armed with this diagram), but on top I found a screw with a square head that could be undone - does grease go in there?

Many vehicles these days come with sealed Ball Joints etc...I have the same issue and still not found anywhere I can squeeze the gunk in.

No, most of the ball joints do not have grease nipples fitted, just blanking screws. I solved the problem on mine by using one of the nipples off the rear propshaft UJ's (I've got a spare new UJ so didn't have to take one out of the propshaft itself but you could do). I was amazed how much grease went into each ball joint before any oozed out. It certainly made my suspension a lot quieter & smoother.

As for the anti roll bar (ARB), it's the bendy bar that's fixed to the chassis rails just behind the front suspension and onto the lower front wishbones by droplinks. It's probable that the ARB bushes are worn. That will cause an MOT failure in the UK (mine did so I know) but they are cheap and easy to replace.
