HI FOLKS I HAVE A 3.0 SURF SSRG I HAVE NOTICED THAT JUST AS I PULL AWAY FROM A STANDSTILL I GET A NOISE LIKE RUBBING A WET FINGER ON THE EDGE OF A GLASS,( A LIGHT WHINE) ONCE I AM PROPERLY UNDER WAY IT STOPS. IT ALSO DOES IT WHEN I FIRST START THE ENGINE FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS. IS THIS NORMAL NOISE FOR AN AUTO BOX? ANY IDEAS FOLKS?

I might be wrong but as you say the noise is also there when you first start the engine the first thing I would check would be the fan belts. If they are slack they will be noisy when you rev up as the slack belts try to 'catch up' with the drive pulley and usually when you rev up to pull away. Worth checking first even if just to eliminate.

Mine does the same, only at very slow speed, as if its taking up the drive. My Surf was serviced so thoughly a couple of months back and its still does it if not quite as loud now. Auto oil was changed along with all the belts and the garage that did the work are very good. So i do think its something inside the auto box.

        Auto Gearbox Noise

Have seen the light , ditched the old ******* french made thing and now grin from ear to ear every day , that turbo whistle, smooth easy driving, then the howl from the auto box! imagine an angry vacuum cleaner on steroids and you will get an idea of the noise! , it doesn't deafen me but i'm sure you shoudn't be able to hear any whine, it's all ok taking it easy but put your lead wellies on and the noise is there! anybody got anything to say about ' normal ' noise levels ?

you've only posted 4 posts. I take it your a new surf owner.
That whine could be coming from your turbo spooling as you take off. That whine should start as you rev to about 1500 RPMS. if thats the case, back off on the gas and if that whine stops then its your turbo spooling. if thats the case then there is nothing to worry about

Yeah, there arn't any noises normally.

You don't get much turbo noise from the 3.0, its tucked down the side of the engine, unlike the 2.4 where its on top.

Most of these posts sound like loose belts, dodgy belt tensioners, split intake pipe, or lack of oil somewhere.

Just read the post by Ferret , the noise does indeed come on around 1500 rpm but i can hear the turbo whistle as well , the whine is still there and does go if i back off the gas but then again i would expect it to go with reduced torque through the box , will check all the belts tommorow , all oils are ok as is the intake hose, i was wondering if it was worn bearings on the input side of the gearbox (130000 km approx) ?

Thanks for the advice I will change the air con belt as I know thats knackerd and check the tension on the others, the noise is directly related to the amount of throttle I give it, Fuel pump noise ? but I am sure its not the turbo that doesnt start until much later on. Thanks any how if I find the Cause I will Let every one know via the web site.
