  • Low milage???

Rang up about and looked at a lot of Surfs b4 I bort my current one.
From what i found, the few with FSH's seemed to have higher milage and quite alot of the "low" milage one's seemed to have High milage niggles........rust,slow electrics, oily engines etc etc.(close look in the places where the steam cleaners couldn't get to).

    The best (worst) example......65KM's (38,000m's)on a '92 !!!! yeah right!!

What ever the clock's say i'm

I think we have a sceptic in our midst. I Run two Jap imports both under 70000kms both 92's and both run look and drive like a 70000 kms car. I have no doubt that the mileage is genuine. My advise is if you dont trust em dont buy em.

"When offered a car described as a "UK car", look out for rust, high mileage and a lower specification". LOL

I know where you are coming from there.

Bottom line I think when you buy a Surf is do a good inspection on it before you buy. Apart from the Heads they are pretty long lasting cars anyway so I don't think the mileage is really an issue. I'd rather have an honest High Miler than one I'm not sure about.

            Cheers

mine's been clocked.... i think just from kms to miles so not too bad, the bloke told me that it was illegal to change that but the MOT says 80 odd thousand and the clock says 60 odd thousand.... but still, not a spot of rust only sign i can see is a shiney steering wheel and a fag burn in the 4wd selector boot!

                Yo Bigman....

If the 'clocking' was from kms to miles it would be 80 to near 48k miles......meaning its done about 12k MILES since the mot.
As a rough guide, to convert k's to m's its x6 /10 (only a rough guide but it works when your working out speed limits thru France....)

Heres a nice little link to convert your km's to miles or vice-versa.
                  Plus other conversions too.

When i bought my 91 it had 8000kms (yes that's eight thousand) on the clock. I know this is obviously wrong, but 3 years down the track and I now have 100000kms on it, should make reselling it a piece of cake.

                      Hi all

To convert miles to km divide by 5 and multiply by 8 - so 25 miles is 40 km etc. This method is accurate to a couple of percent.

The UK average anual miles is around 12,000 miles (did 14,000 this year myself) and the average Japanese driver does AROUND 10,000kms.

There are of course exceptions to the rule- but be suspicious of anything deviating too much from this (+- 30,000km?). My '93 Surf came with 111K on it which would ring true. I'd be wary of any 10 year old car with less than 70k on it though.

This is nothing to do with conversions, but I reckon if you look at too many motors you start to doubt your own instincts. The nuts and bolts of it all is, if it looks good, feels good and is good legally, then grab it quick, cos some other bugger will....
