  • New cylinder head needed...

    Hiya,

I'm new to the forum and hope someone can help. Turns out the cylinder head on my Surf is cracked and needs replacing. My mechanic has advised me to get a new one and best price he can get is £900 inc vat and with current bits swapped over (sorry - I'm not technically minded!). Is this about right or can anyone recommend somewhere else I can try? Having said that, I'd rather pay a little more and know I'm not buying dodgy.

    Thanks for your help...

UK cylinder Heads is the place to go. Should cost you no more than £600 for a recon with a 12 month warenty.

        Labour should be about £700.

Head gasket kit from RoughTrax is about £82.

        Hope this helps.

Great, thanks for your replies. I've phoned both up (think I got UK Cylinder Heads from another thread earlier) and got some quotes through. Both well over £600.00 though. I think I'll pass the info over to my mechanic and let him choose the best option. Been going to him for the last 15 years and know he's trustworthy. Always a worry though if you don't know the person/garage you're dealing with.

          Thanks again.

Just a quick note. STEVO is trying to source 3.0 heads but has not found a cheap supplier as yet.

There's probably not too much of a market for them! Knowing Toyota the 3.0L head has been somewhat over engineered to avoid a repeat....

Maybe the 1KZ-TE is coming up to 'that' age when they are starting to fail? The earliest engines are now 12 or 13 years old. It would be interesting to know if Steve's enquiries are for replacing the earlist circa 1993 3.0L Surf engines (like mine!) or if the failures occur 'randomly' across the age distribution of 1KZ-TE's?

I have to say, Steve was really helpful when I spoke to him. Didn't have anything in stock but took the trouble to find one for me. And called me back when he said - you don't get that often these days!

My Surf's a '94. Bought the 3.0L because I was told it was rock solid. Just my luck...

A small consolation for me, my mechanic said that it hadn't cracked in the usual place and therefore wasn't down to my driving or me over-cooking the engine. He was really surprised - first one he's ever done... Maybe a "manufacturing fault"?

Unlucky mate. I think there's been less than 5 in the 2 years that I've been here that have cracked a 3.0 head. Compared to the 2.4, you're right, they're pretty reliable so far, but only time will tell!

                            Hiya,

Got my surf back last weekend and feel like a dog with a new toy - great to have it back. Even though I do keep looking in the rearview mirror for smoke trails... Just need to find some good off-roading stuff to see what else I can break ;>)

Thanks to everyone for your help.
