  • Remote Key

Just joined you all with a '96 SSR-G. Fabulous fun and great value for money and, guys, thanks for all the tips it gave me confidence to buy one.

It came with a single remote key. Nothing trick just lock and unlock but I would like a spare. Went to the local Toyota dealer in MK and they didn't want to know although they did say they can get a blank but no remote. Are main dealers always like this when someone mentions Jap Import. Can anyone help please?

Hi vmc ssrg mmmmm nice motors aint they, as for the key i was fortunate enough to get two and a spare but only called my toyota dealer once and the response was enough for me i can manage im sure with out them, any good locksmith will sort you out, it will work the central locking just have to use the key instead of the button, and i'll telll you what, get a price for a key to work it and if you do youll buy the one without the button because i bet its an arm and a leg, usually the case innit.

        Remote Key

Thanks for that guys , yes I will get 2 blanks cut and keep them as spares. But if you are interested I have found a guy who I think will be able to sell me a remote transponder which can 'learn' the code from my remote. I can use it with a 'blank' key but I am waiting to hear from him 'cause he thinks he might be able to get a proper key. Nothing to do with Toyota UK of course. If he succeeds I will post his details on the site.

        Regards

        Valentine C.

            Remote Key Update

Well I still haven't succeeded and the guy who thought he could help tells me that the key has a rolling code so you can't just clone the frequency. But my local locksmith in Aylesbury (who has cut me 2 perfect blanks) says that he is waiting for some Toyo transponder keys and should be able to help at £65 per throw.

I also got nowhere with Northampton Toyota who said they can get virtually any bit for the Surf EXCEPT the transponder keys and that he thought he could get blanks. but that doesn't help 'cause all reasonable locksmiths hold them anyway.

So I rang Toyota UK tel: 01737 363633 and posed them the problem. They rang me back in 10 minutes and confirmed that dealers struggle with remote keys but should have been more helpful....... They said that if you can find out the key code (from the Jap books or on or with the key) they can get them otherwise you are stuffed, basically.

The dealer I bought the Surf from said that for around £200 I can get a new transponder unit and 2 key fob transmitters but will have to use a blank key on the ignition.

So I'll keep trying, it shouldn't be rocket science to get a spare remote but he economics of it are different.

I will keep you posted on progress.

              Progress on the Remote Key

Getting there. I have found a guy at Bancroft Keys in Milton Keynes who can provide 2 fobs and a new receiver for around £170 but it will mean using a blank key for the ignition. If you want details do e-mail me.

But Castle Toyota in OZ seem to get bits from the factory that other dealers can't/wont. They CAN get the original remote key and they will translate the Jap instructions for programming into English. Problem is it is expensive, could be up to £150 so it depends how much you want to keep your Surf original. Hmmm lot of dosh for a key. So Toyota MK, Northampton and UK head office explain that.

Seems left and right hand aren't connecting or there is something more sinister going on.......

Castle Toyota get a great write up on the OZ Surf site, they are helpful and seem to put customer service at the forefront from what I read. Our problem is that with carriage it could be pricey to get stuff to the UK but if you want that bit you can't get here its worth a try. What I don't understand is how they can get bits but the UK can't. I want to know why.

              Castle's web site is:

              www.chtoyota.com.au

If at first you don't succeed try, try then try again.

hey mate that seems a lot of money just for the central locking you can get a full thatcham cat 1 alarm system fitted for 300 notes, thats alarm immobilser central locking the works ! now that makes more sense than just 170 on the doors locking !

We can, you just have a knob for a dealer. The Toyota parts guy in Basingstoke has got parts for my 4Runner, which is a 1984 model, imported from Saudia Arabia!

All they need is the chassis number.

A remote key for a UK 4Runner is about £80. Linda's romote is playing up on her Surf, so we'll see whats the cheaper option.

Was it Steven Eagell Toyota? I have found them very helpful and even had a good chat with their parts and sevice manager, who said he has no worries about getting parts for imports as they are no threat to their market sector. They have relocated in MK and just opened a new branch in Luton, so they could still be having teething problems. I would ask to see the head honcho.
                        It's only a hobby!

                          Remote Key Update

Hi KS Phil, yes it was Eagells at Fenny Stratford and I'm sure I didn't get the head honcho. But to be fair to the guy he did say he thought they could get a good number of the other parts. The thing was, I just got the impression they didn't want to help. You know, go that little bit further to provide good service and point me in the right direction. But I suppose I'm expecting too much these days.... Sad ain't it.

Am still following up another lead and will let you know the outcome.

And Andy, thanks for the link and I am on to them. But Jeez did you see the problems they have with some Rovers if you inadvertently push the buttons away from the car!!! And we think we have problems.

                              Remote door unlocking

I did a search today on ebay under TOYOTA PRADO, there is currently a brand new remote door unlocking system for £29.99 PLUS P+P.
Could this possibly solve a long standing problem???????
