Hi, Did you refit the glowplug strap correctly? I.E. there should be no contact between strap and the glowplug posts.

      Hi
Most diesels will produce some black smoke on acceleration, if it is excessive then it will most likely be either injectors faulty or timing belt worn/stretched. I have witnessed a stretched timing belt that moved the cam timing by 2 degrees which can make a fair bit of difference!!
If you can manage a set of spanners it isnt too hard to check your cambelt and timing, if that looks good maybe look into injectors???
      Hope that helps
If it aint broke...........give it some more abuse!!!!!!!!
I gave it some abuse.................and it broke!!!!!!!

I reckon it's probably the injectors need refurbing. Take it to a diesel specialist who can rebuild them.

        Cheers

          more of the same

I was going to ask the same question - with a slight variant - so added on here to save another post.

          2.4 TD manual . 60000 miles.

Thick black smoke if revved from cold.
Smokes black on driving, especially if heavy footed in 2nd.
After a long run, small puff of black if revved.
After a long run not too much black on driving.

          No white or blue smoke.

Maybe gets less with dose of redex in the fuel.
NO other symptoms of any problem.

          Normal for an old diesel?
or should I have something looked at?

This is my first diesel, and I dont know one end of a spanner from the other - so stay simple please.
          .......because I can....OK!

Get the injectors looked at, it done wonders for Linda's 3.0, and that only had 70,000 on it. All 4 needed new nozzles.

Also if someones messed with the pump timing, it'll knock like a bugger and smoke under throttle, but go like stink!

              This is what they say:

BLOCKING EGR VALVE - Suffering from a smokey surf, poor performance ?! This might be worth a look into.

Interesting!!! My Surf seemed to be on 40 a day until the turbo light stopped comming on under acceleration, now there's no smoke at all, but lack of power !!! Where did you get the seals from paulo? I think I'll have a bash at changing them on my truck? Cheers
