  • Noise only while in 4WD

    Hi
Posted a question about a noise from the front steering after using 4WD on hard dry ground. The main reply back was to get under it and grease all the points on the drive.

I have done that now but the noise is still there...

It happens when you put it into 4WD and then turn either past half lock.
It sounds like a metal bar being dragged along spaced metal railings but under tension?

    any thoughts

    Thanks
    Mark

    Mark.

That sounds like you are still using it on hard dry ground- the answer to this is....

    Don't.

The noise you can here is the transmission trying to cope with the fact that no tyres are slipping and preventing the 'axle windup'.

There is no centre diff on the 2nd gen so the 4wd is only for loose surfaces, mud and snow, or where you aren't going to turn the steering wheel on a hard surface.
Alternatively, if you aren't using it on hard dry ground then it sounds like you knocked out a CV joint, inner wheel hub bearing or the diff.
    Cheers

Sounds like a CV, you need to have the drive shafts out and check the CV's for slack and wear.

        Thanks

Andy I learnt from the last time not to use it in the Dry.
It was wet and slippery so it would appear from what you and Tony say that it is the CV.

Not knowing a lot about the cv(like what it does), I need to use the surf to go on holiday on saturday.

Will i do any damage to it using it in 2WD while away?

        Thanks
