Oil every where

Was going to change the glow plugs today, but couldn't get a couple of them out.

However, I think I have found the source of my smokey emissions. Every pipe from the air filter wa drenched in oil, up to the carb. One elbow actually had a pool of oil.


At first I thought it might have been a seal in the turbo gone, but as there was oil in the plastic air manifold and 90 elbow just before the turbo, it it can't be that.

The only other cuplrit is the oil air beather line from the rocker cover to the air manifold.

Is excessive oil usual? What exactly is the breather there for? Is it possible to remove it from the manifold and give it its own small filter, thus preventing any oil making its way into the air system?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

You and me were doin the same thing today so. I'm obsessed (almost) with getting an oil catch can installed inline on the breather hose, but its like mentioning that you have a disease which they know nothing about in the motor shops.

I took all the different bits off between the filter and the intake manifold (exclude the turbo ) and washed them all in a bucket of steamy water. The filter box to plastic pipe flexi rubber duct had the customary tear in it just like everyone has. For years that has been letting bad air in and oil spray out and today I epoxy resined it back together and its holding well for now. Got the glue out for the elbow pre turbo also, its badly cracked.

I cant be ar$ed putting the breather pipe back on to foul it all up again so with all parts back where they should be, I have the breather pipe venting into the open and am expecting a fuel pump covered in black $hite immediately, not worried. The port where the breather should hook up onto near the filter I have covered in 4 plys of polythene held tight with a jubilee clip.

Have searched on the net and a company called Mocal in the states might have the catch cans, also Greddy or Greedy, but havent sourced anything definite yet....

Rough Trax do a replacement air hose for £28.00, blue silicon type. Looks better than the original as well!

Funnily enough, the pre-turbo elbow had gone on mine. Think it is the heat as the rubber wasn't that flexible.

Oil catch can should be easy to make. Small round can with a baffle plate in, and a screw bottom to drain it out every now and again.

What is the breather pipe there for? Can you run the engine with it disconnected from the air manifold? It it just to allow for the air expanding in the rocker cover?

Not got this problem with my Surf, but the old Ford Cross flow lean burn fitted in 90,s Escorts and the like were terrible at producing condensation. This was usually deposited in the rocker cover giving you a nice white mess and the impression of head failure( don't go there). So to resolve this I removed the breather from the rocker cover and placed it in its own catch bottle, made from an Autoglym polish bottle one of the small ones which I cable tied to the inner wing. Problem solved. Got to better than rust proofing the engine bay.

Used to use an old EP90 g/box oil filler bottle straped to the chassis on rally car , just run a hose into it from rocker cover and empty once a month .

It was an enviromental issue in the late 60's(?) to stop oil residue and fumes to make the system 'sealed' and not open vented to atmosphere.

Cheers, that's easy enough to do. Will hunt around the shed for a suitably sized can.

Is this something that might be checked during the MOT? Just wondering how permenant I can make it.

Both Lindas 3.0 and our 2.4 had oil in the intakes, clean them out awhile back and not much has returned, just builds up over time.

My V8 blows smoke from its filters on each rocker cover, have to clean the wire filter pads every 2-3 months to stop them dripping!

Just moniter it over time, you will get some oil, but it shouldn't be running out of the breather pipe, just a few fumes if you pull it off while running.

A Brasso tin, with a stainless steel scouring pad, or two stuffed inand an in/out pipe near the bottom (us it inverted), should do the trick. I just drilled the lid and put a drain tap in. Open the tap every service and run it into a suitable recepticle. I don't know why I bother, though. When I change the oil all the old stuff from the sump goes into the bowl. When I unscrew the Oil filter it all goes onto the garage floor and I have to buy more cat litter (Its cheaper than the granules from Halfarauds etc).

Well oil seperator is in now. Used 32mm plastic sprinkler pipe, a T piece and an elbow, and 4m of garden hose, then cable tied next to relay boxes.

Seems to work a treat, can see the oil starting to form on the insides and drip down.

I'll post some pics if any one wants more info.

Sorry, haven'y got that 2.4 anymore - so no pics!

Anyhow, to clarify, I had a pipe coming from the rocker cover outlet, into the side of my collection pot (a piece of plastic pipe), about half way up.

then another pipe coming straight of the top of the pot which feed back into the main air duct where it would normally go.I used some wire wool as a filter seperating thre inlet and outlet pipes from the collection pot.

Worked well, collected the oil, and ran a lot less smokey!
