Oil filter removal

What's the least painful way of getting the oil filter away from the engine on my '91 2.4 TD surf?
I've read the tips on loosening the thing, but thats not my problem - which way does the filter come out of the engine bay and what should you disconnect to make room for it to come out?
Even my normally reliable local mechanic didn't know how to get the thing out!

Any hints, tips and ideally photo's, would be greatly appreciated.

there is a removable panel in the inner wing, behind the wheel, take it off and the filter pops out easy.
