How do i lower....

....my spare wheel.

Something seems amiss. Im assuming that on a 1993 SSRX, im suppose to winch the spare up and down via the slot in my rear bumper. However, on inspecting the rear of the car, i notice there is nothing connecting the rear bumper slot to the mechanism that lowers and lifts the wheel. Will someone be kind enough to either put up a photo of the linkage or point me to where i can get an assembly.

there should be a winding handle in the tool roll in your truck, just push through the slot in the bumper as far as you can go and you should feel the end of the bar engage with the winding mechanism. it took me a couple of attempts to get it to work. turn anticlockwise to lower the spare. hope this helps.

The winding handle is in the tool roll, but the bar that goes through the bumper is under the back seat

is this the same for a 91 surf coz i've no tool roll also i cant use the jack one bar has a hook on it for the jack but i cant connect the second handle to the first . its got a peg on the end but nothing to slot into on the jack bar !!!!!

The usual tools are here. Tool roll is usually in the panels in the rear luggage area

I see in your previous post that you say that you have the long bar with the hook on one end for the jack, is the other end of the bar got a square end? if so that is the end that goes into winding mechanism.

Put the bar hook end in first its easier to locate in the winder also there should be a smaller winder handle bar with a square hole in the centre this fits over the square end of the hook bar so you can wind the spare down.

I watched this thread when it came up first - it all sounded simple enough, so I just filed the data in my brain.

When I replaced my exhaust a few months back, I needed to get the spare out of the way to route the back section into place. I couldn't work out how to lower it with any of the tools in the roll, so I ended up removing the two 18" long brackets that the spare butts up against from the chassis.

The spare has been carried in the boot since then, till I returned it to its rightful home last night.

I hooked the hanging retainer into two stud holes in the wheel fairly easily, but could not get the two-piece tool to wind up the chain hanger mechanism for love nor money, nor force.

1. Neither of the two parts fit into, or attach to, the other in any useful way. One end of the straight bar will go into the square hole in the L-shaped bar, but what good is that, other than a Homer-type moment of "heehee" distraction?

2. Assuming it's the straight bar that actually inserts into the turner part of the wheel hanger mechanism, one end (without the screw) is too small to engage, and the other end (with screw) seems too big to go in.

In the end, I had to use the shaft of a spanner I had cut in half for another job, to turn the mechanism half a turn at a time. Very awkward, crap access, trying to balance my torch (fading batteries - this job, and all my Surf jobs are performed in my driveway), lots of cursing, nicks & cuts.

I have the exact same two-piece tool pictured in the earlier post. It seems to me there should be some sort of 40mm-ish x 5mm-ish attachment for the end of the straight bar to slot into the turner mechanism, but even then, I can't get the two pieces to fit together (I assume they should go together like a fishing rod spigot or ferrule?).

What am I doing wrong?

Is the straight ber end with the screw meant to fit into the turner mechanism, with the screw providing drive?

Sorry to bring up a boring topic again, but even if a kind passer by tries to help my wife change a wheel, they probably won't be able to.

If you look at the pic with the part numbers (bit hard to read) then it will be 09115 and 09135A for the spare mechanism.Hook end fits into winder mechanism and the other piece slips on square end to use for winding.

I don't have the OE jack nor the bar with the hook on the end.

At least now I know it's not my fault I couldn't get it to work...

I'll try to make up something myself to fit.
