  • Fault code 12

My turbo light went out on the way to work this morning and the red 'check' light came on, I lost power slightly so slowed down and it cleared, the turbo started working again and it was ok, this sequence repeated itself once and has been ok since. I did a diagnostic and got a code 12 just now (timer control valve) (pump). Can anyone explain what this means please, is my injector pump shagged/on the way out?
    cheers.

I reset the diagnostic thingy and a few days later had the same thing happen, the turbo stopped working (the green light went off and the red engine check light came on). (code 12 again) The only thing I have found wrong is that the coolant level was a bit low, the coolant wasnt being sucked back into the system as the engine cooled leaving the top up tank high and the rad low, I found a bit of crud on the filler cap above the thermo, maybe code 12 is triggered if the engine starts to get a bit hot? but the temp gauge has never gone over halfway. Any Ideas?

Here are the codes for a 2LTE diesel.

      1 - Normal
2 - Turbo boost pressure sensor
      4 - Coolant temperature sensor
      5 - Correction resistance (Pump)
6 - Pump speed sensor (Pump)
      7 - Throttle position sensor
8 - Intake air temperature sensor
      9 - Vehicle speed sensor
      10 - Starter switch
11 - Switch sign (Vehicle not in P or N or A/C on)
      12 - Timer control valve (Pump) <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
      13 - Crank position sensor

Yes I got the fault thanks but no-one here seems to know what it means or why this code 12 comes up, there about 3 people on this site now that have had it happen and the syptoms are simply that the turbo stops boosting causing/or caused by a loss of power and the red check light comes on. The car still drives and I managed to clear the fault by revving the engine. So the question is what is the 'timer control valve' and where is it, and what does it do, also why?

If reving it clears it, I'd rule out dodgy wiring, pull the sender, and check any vacuum hoses going to it, if none and its just a switch/sender I'd just get another one and try it.

Still trying to find out its function

Arrrrrrrr, many thanks me hearty, my cam timing belt be way over due for a change (nearly 10.000 miles west to be sure) I have the belt here and I may even change the rad for a less leaky vessel while i'm fiddling about below decks, arrrr.

There are lots of things that can cause Code 12 to appear. Things such as all the ECU engine sensors (including the air one, which of then gets missed), an air leak in a fuel line, a blocked fuel filter, a partially blocked filter in the fuel pump (the tiny one), but mostly it isn't caused by the TCV. This is a very expensive part and my experience has shown that it hasn't fixed most problems (but, indeed, has for some). The ECU water temp sensor - the one at the back of the engine is often the culprit too, but you need to carefully go over the whole fuel system outside of the pump to try and track it down.

Lastly, and like others, I have had the same issue and, every now and then, my Check Light comes on due to Code 12, but clears itself before limp mode cuts in, and I get over it - I just live with it.
