Red engine check light

Just a few days back I had a mechanic remove and fix my starter motor because it wast playing up.....upon re-installing it, the engine started fine but the "red engine check light" lit up right from startup........what did this guy do wrong???

Hi there,

He has broken the engine temp sensor, plug,
and or the wiring. it's just above the starter
and easily broken when struggling to get the
starter out. (Code 4)

Hi Kpunk,

It helps the ecu, to know how hot the engine is, and mixed with
all the other signals, it helps to keep the engine running, at
this time it "thinks" the engine is stone cold, (no signal) it maybe
over fueling, like the old type auto chokes, your mpg might suffer.
More than likely it's a broken wire to the sensor plug.

mmmm....I see, will this stop my temperature gauge from working as well??...cause its working fine, but the red light stays on and slows my truck down too much, I cant go faster than 80Km!..lol

Hi kplunk,

The temp gauge will work as normal, nothing to do with engine temp sensor,
Because the ecu is not getting a signal from the engine temp sensor, it has
put the engine in "limp home mode" until it's fixed, that's all you'll get.

Thanks for your reply's Gman, you've been very helpful, where exactly is this temp sensor located???......can you upload a pic or something....I really want to check it out myself, mechanics cost too much!..thanks

Sorry, don't have any pics of the sensor, but, on the 2.4, it's located above the starter motor to the left of the dipstick tube (as you look at the engine from the passenger side)

Sorry mate,

No pics from me either, as RebV8 says, it's just above
the starter, screwed into the block, if you're lucky he has
only broken the wires in the plug and not the sensor.

Hi guys, sorry for the terribly late response but I enjoyed my truck so much after having it fixed. It was running mint from March up until July, when I decided to sell it.

After I sold it I got myself an 87 Hilux Surf in almost faultless condition with a 2LT mechanical engine in it.

It was sad to see my old baby go after having it for the past 10 years but I welcomed my new one with open arms and it has been very good to me since July.
