  • Rattles and black smoke

    Hi
Recently changed all four auxillary belts after an alternator one snapped and took 2 others with it. All bets changed and tensioned ok, I tested truck for 1/2 hour tickover and all was well. But after setting off to work and getting a mile away Loss of power loads of black smoke and sounds like a bag of spanners.
I don't think the two issues are related but can't be sure. I'm guessing an injector has gone down hopefully not the pump. Is there any way of checking or any other ideas?

But surely it wouldn't run at all, and would me changing other belts have affected timing belt?

Could just be coincidental timing, perhaps they're a similar age?
It may run if pump timing is just a little off...worth checking belt condition and tensioner/idler bearings.

If you can, grab some video so we can hear the noise ... might help diagnosis.

its not uncommon for the cam belt to slip a tooth. it just runs the timing very retarded giving a ton of black smoke.
i know its a pain to check but its one thing i would check before firing up again.

                    Harmonic Balancer

Hi guys finally got round to having a look at truck at weekend. It seems the crankshaft pulley has come free from its rubber bonding this explains while was charging correctly as belts slipping. The bottom pulleys look like they've been floating back and forth and worn into cambelt cover. This looks like its caused a piece of melted plastic to jump up into one of the pulleys and cause belt to slip and jump a tooth or two.
All stripped ready for new belts and pulley except old timing belt still on at min.is there a link on here with pics of timing marks on cam, crank and fuel pump.
                    Many thanks
