welcome Snowy, I too part exed a D---o for the Surf and I have not stopped grinning yet, I have been towing caravans since 1975 with several towcars in that time some manual some auto. I can say that there is nothing like heat to kill an auto gearbox and the standard cooler fitted as part of the rad is not man enough to dissapate the extra heat produced by towing. As a matter of couse I have always fitted an additional oil cooler. Kenlow do one for the Surf around £100 and it is DIY fitting.

You will find that the pipes coming out of your gearbox go to an oil cooler fitted inside the bottom tank of your radiator. In Oz it has been found to be very inneficient. I myself had the bottom tank replaced with a standard tank out of a manual Hilux (no oil cooler) and I fitted a seperate oil cooler in front of my radiator. I have done many Klms towing a boat and have had no overheating problems.
