hi all, my 1992 2.4 surf has just started to smoke on start up and has a little rattle like a belt or a bearing, its ok when its warm though , would blanking off the erg valve help to stop it

Overfuelling/unburnt diesel.

Air filter clean?

it was ok when i got it and ive not done a thing to it yet m8 also slugish on start up for around 3 seconds

In that case, sounds like it needs a new set of glowplugs and an air filter.

The black smoke and rattles at cold start-up means the fuel isn't being burned properly, which is most likely due to knackered glowplugs.
